ChiWhoBike #4

A person stands proud in front of a light blue Tern GSD ebike with a blue bag with flowers on the rear cargo rack. They are bald with dark skin and are wearing a white shirt with colorful and vibrant abstract flowers, standing in front of a large colorful circle sculpture.

I got this bike three years ago, as of last month, and I would not have this bike if it wasn’t for the Chicago biking community on Twitter. I was saving up for an electric bike, but this person stealing my previous bike significantly sped up my timeline. So people donated to a GoFundMe to get me this, and we’ve had lots of adventures. It’s been a conversation starter with lots of people, and I’m almost at 13,000 miles. I’ve taken some longer trips, but usually it’s just your daily trips, and it’s amazing how much it adds up, those short little trips within a five to eight mile radius.

I’ve had a few experiences where I’ve gone to CPD and said hey this person tried to run me over and they don’t take it seriously. Like, waving a gun at you, CPD would take that pretty seriously, but we don’t really pay attention to the ways in which people will very easily weaponize their vehicles. They know that they’re faster, they know that they’re heavier, they know that they can cause damage, and people can be irrational, like that’s just human nature, and we make it easy for people to behave dangerously behind the wheel and have zero consequences.
