ChiWhoBike #56

A man stands with a grey Divvy ebike in front of a black garage door with a cartoon face, the logo of Spiteful Brewing, on it. The man is wearing black gym shorts, black sneakers, and a long sleeved grey shirt, with a grey and blue baseball cap, and has light skin and a medium length dark beard.

I own two bikes, but they are not ready for the summer yet. So I will get those out. But I prefer the Divvy e-bikes because they are quick. You can literally drop them anywhere. You can pick them up anywhere. They’re great for going up and down the lake path. They’re great for going within the neighborhoods like where we’re at now. And they have a basket, so if you need to put something in it, they’re great for that.

And I’ve been in Chicago for 13 years now. I’ve been car free for seven and I have been biking pretty much since then. I’ve been in Edgewater for eight years, so ever since I’ve been close to the train, close to the lake. Biking up here is really good, there’s a lot of paths to take. And so that’s what I prefer. I bike throughout the whole year, and having Divvy available throughout the whole year is great. It’s a great resource for a lot of people throughout the city.

I have actually been privileged, that my last three apartments have been next to a grocery store, so that provided me convenience. But being able to bike to specialty stores, bike to places like breweries. Like two weeks ago I did the Shamrock Shuffle, so biking down to that. . . not having to use a car. But we have a Zipcar membership, so if we need to use a car, like going to Target, things like that, we can do that. But really using the city for what it is, the Red line, all the trains, whatnot, the buses, you can really get away with not having a car here.

I think that we should use biking as a means to get around the city more. In COVID, I used biking as my reason to get outside more. I was biking up and down all of the North side to the breweries. Using that to support our local businesses and explore all the neighborhoods, not just stay in my neighborhood but get to a different neighborhood, and really experience all of our 77 neighborhoods.
